I love this little gem of a grocery store. My family has shopped there since it opened. One of the best things about the store used to (yes, used to) be the bakery. The cinnamon cake donuts, thin sourdough rye bread, vienna rolls, and apple fritters were among my favorites. The cake donuts are still pretty good, but the rye bread is sliced too thick and is often underdone and doughy. In fact, a lot of the time, the bread, rolls and other baked goods are underbaked. But the worst is what has been done to the apple fritters. These used to be fantastic. Full of cinnamon and chunks of apple, baked free form so they were bumpy and puffy and amazingly brown and gooey and delicious. Now they look like cinnamon kitchen sponges. I was told that the bakery wanted a 'more uniform look' Please, for fritter lovers everywhere, change them back. It's just wrong to sell cinnamon kitchen sponges.
Besides this, the Goldbar IGA is great. Fantastic staff, great service and a pretty good selection considering the small store. They have been great at listening to the customer in the past - please listen now and change the fritters back! Even the staff have noted that the new ones are just wrong...
After having fallen this morning coming out of the Goldbar IGA (now a Sobeys store), and just realizing how badly strained my shoulders are,I am not too happy with their attention to the ice at the entrance/exit. I was badly shaken, and it took 3 to 5 minutes to regain my feet in which time there was noone going in or out, and no store personell visible to call. And to add to my anger, the ammonia that I wished to purchase was not available, so a huge waste of my time plus the endangerment to my physical health!!!!
